Coronavirus: Deadline extended for £2,500-a-month furlough support scheme
The cut-off date for furloughed workers to apply for financial support from the government has been extended by three weeks.
It comes after pressure from people who complained they could not receive the emergency wage subsidy of up to £2,500-a-month because they switched jobs just before the coronavirus crisis.
Business groups had also been putting pressure on ministers, saying their members have to decide by 18 April if they can keep staff on their payroll beyond the end of May because employment law requires companies to declare a 45-day consultation period for mass redundancies.
On Wednesday, the Treasury announced it was bringing forward the cut off date from 28 February to 19 March – the day before Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the scheme.
It expects 200,000 people to benefit from the move.
