When France takes over the Council of the European Union presidency in 2022, it will push its native tongue as the “lingua franca” of Brussels.

——————–

A senior French diplomat said: “Even if we admit that English is a working language and it is commonly practiced, the basis to express oneself in French remains fully in place in the EU institutions.

“We must enrich it, and make it live again so that the French language truly regains ground, and above that, the taste and pride of multilingualism.

“We will always ask the Commission to send us in French the letters it wishes to address to the French authorities, and if they fail to do so, we will wait for the French version before sending it.”

The diplomat said all high-level meetings of the EU Council, as well as minutes and letters, will be in French instead of English during the six-month presidency.

In April, EU affairs minister Clement Beaune and secretary of state Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne said the presidency created “an opportunity to hold high this vital fight for multilingualism”, in a move that appears to be anti-English.

This comes as tensions between France and Britain rise, with ongoing rows over fishing rights.

Do you think Macron is moving to bin English out of spite? Have your say in the comments section below.

Mr Beaune believes the EU should stop speaking “a type of broken English” following on from Brexit.

He added: “Let’s get used to speaking our languages again!”

“It is, truly, a fight for European linguistic diversity.”

Since Brexit, English has remained as the most commonly used language by the European Commission, but Mr Macron, among other French politicians, wants to change that.

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French National Rally party, said: “Defending France also means defending the French language.”

Julien Aubert, a French politician serving as a member of the National Assembly, said: “The withdrawal of the UK from the EU has had a number of consequences for how EU institutions organise their work and exchanges.

“English is now the mother tongue of just one percent of the population of the EU, while French is the second language of many members and is the most-practised foreign language, after English.”

French is the official language in Belgium and Luxembourg, both member states of the EU.

Do you think the EU should use French as it’s predominant language over English? Vote now.
