Sunak drops £1bn hint winter lockdown looming as Chancellor pushes Covid panic button

The Chancellor said one-off grants of up to £6,000 per premises for hospitality and leisure firms would be available with immediate effect.

A further £100million in discretionary funding is also being given to local authorities to support other businesses in need.

The funding comes after demands for the business sector for urgent action in recent days due to the rapid spread of Covid cases across the UK.

Tens of thousands of Britons have cancelled plans over the past week in a bid to avoid catching the virus.

Case numbers have skyrocketed to record levels with ministers considering whether new lockdown rules are needed to curb infections.
