The quake was picked up by seismologists at the US Geological Survey (USGS). It is thought to have had a depth of 10.0km. The USGC tweeted: “Prelim M6.4 Earthquake Xinjiang-Xizang border region Jun-25 21:05 UTC.”
6.4 is considered very strong on the Richter scale.
Around 100 -150 of these occur every year.
They result in damage to a moderate number of well-built structures in populated areas.
Structures built to resist earthquakes survive with slight to moderate damage.
Poorly designed structures receive moderate to severe damage.
The effects can be felt in wide areas, far from the epicentre.
Strong, violent centre can be felt near the epicentre.
There has been no immediate reports of casualties.
The 2015 Pishan earthquake hit the Xinjiang region also.
It hit 95km southeast of Yilkiqi.
There were 3 reported deaths and 71 reported injuries.

The 1556 Shaanxi earthquake occurred on January 23 that year.
Imperial records show 830,000 people lost their lives.
The epicentre was in the Wei River valley in north-central China.
More than 97 counties were affected.
Buildings as far away as Beijing and Shanghai were reported damaged.
Some reports claim areas reported losing as much as 60 percent of the population.
The Portuguese friar Gaspar da Cruz would travel to Guangzhou later that year and wrote about the earthquake in his book ‘A Treatise of China’.
