Coronavirus map LIVE: FORTY MILLION issued ‘stay home’ notice – ‘Make tough decicions’

Governor Gavin Newsom has told Californians to only leave their homes when it is completely essential during the coronavirus pandemic. He warned that more than half of the 40 million people living in the state would contract the disease in the next few months. In the US, the virus has killed 205 people and more than 14,000 have been infected.

Boris Johnson is expected to implement stricter measures to control the deadly virus in the UK, which could include a lockdown.

The government has already urged people to work from home and to reduce social contact.

On Thursday afternoon, the Prime Minister in a press briefing at Downing Street said: “First, we must stop the disease spreading to a point where it overwhelms our NHS.

“Every country in the world has the same problem.

“This is a disease that is so dangerous and so infectious that without drastic measures to check its progress it would overwhelm any health system in the world.

“That is why we announced the steps yesterday that we did – advising against all unnecessary contact – steps that are unprecedented since World War II.
