Dad of murdered student was asked to fix her bedroom lock days before tragedy
Days before Xana Kernodle was brutally stabbed alongside three fellow-students in the house they shared in Moscow, Idaho, US, her dad had repaired the lock on her bedroom door.
Xana’s mother, Cara Denise Northington, says that the 20-year-old student had a digital lock on her bedroom door and another on the front door.
Cara believed that one of them wasn’t working properly, although she wasn’t entirely sure which one.

The girl’s father, Jeff Kernodle, had visited the house around a week before the murders to repair one of the locks.
But on November 13, an as-yet unknown assailant entered the house and fatally stabbed Xana, as well as her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, 20, and close friends Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves – both 21.
Two other housemates, who had been sleeping on the ground floor of the house, were unharmed and appear to have slept through the bloodbath, police said.
Investigators are working on a theory that the crime may have been committed by a stalker who was obsessed with Kaylee Goncalves, but Cara thinks the reason for the horrific crime goes “much deeper.”
“I think they knew them,” she told the New York Post. “I think they may have even been friends with them. I think it had to have been somebody close to them to have been able to get away with it like this.”

She tearfully added that the police were telling her very little about the progress of the investigation:“I learned more on the news and on TV than they have said to me,” she said.
“I think they have information that they’re not giving us. And it’s real fishy. That’s what I will say.”
Alivea Goncalves, Kaylee’s sister, agreed that the police had not been very forthcoming with information: “A few of the names that have been circulating around.
"I think it’s hard not to dig into this and I don’t know how much of that is we have so little information from law enforcement, and how much of it is really a sister or a father’s intuition,”she said.

Kaylee’s mother, Kristi Goncalves, added: “I just feel like there’s been a couple individuals that were cleared very fast that maybe should not have been”.
Her husband, Steve Goncalves, said that he fears cops investigating his daughter’s murder are too “inexperienced” and that one potential suspect had been allowed to leave the country without being thoroughly investigated.
He added that he has been speaking to a private investigator with a view to launching a separate investigation: “I hate to be that guy, but … everybody has a job and a role to play and this is my role as the parent,” he said.
