Elon Musk unleashes prototype of humanoid Optimus robot during Tesla AI day

Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed a prototype of a humanoid robot that walked onstage.

Musk acknowledged that at last year's Tesla's AI Day, the robot they had was nothing more than “a guy in a suit” but the billionaire showed much more today.

He said that it was “the first time it walked without a tether was tonight on stage" as he confirmed the company are aiming to charge a price of “probably less than $20,000".

The Optimus robot walked forward after entering through the back doors of the stage and attempted to gee up the crowd by doing a “raise the roof” move.

Tesla went on to show several video clips of the robot performing tasks like picking up boxes before they brought out a fully assembled prototype that was not yet fully functional.

The robot contains a 2.3kWh battery pack, runs on a Tesla SoC, as well as possessing Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity as a demonstration was shown on how the robot's knee was built based on a human knee, as well as human-inspired robot hands.

The hands are designed to pick up various different objects of various shapes and sizes as well as carrying a 20lb bag in one hand.

Musk was bullish on the impact the Optimus robot could have on society as he said: “It’ll be a fundamental transformation for civilisation as we know it".

He also said the robot is “the most important product development we’re doing this year” and has quite confidently stated that he believes it has the potential to be “more significant than the vehicle business over time".

Further potential applications for the robot includes cooking, gardening, or even “catgirl” sex partners, Musk said, while he claimed that next year could spell the beginning of production.
