Fit and healthy dad, 27, with coronavirus symptoms dies days after son’s birth

A healthy young dad who started showing coronavirus symptoms last week has died just 10 days after the birth of his baby boy.

Thomas Davies, 27, became ill on Friday while working at the Albion Inn pub in Bangor, North Wales.

At first, he had a cough and decided to self-isolate at his home in Penygroes, about 10 miles away.

But he became worse, and sadly died on Thursday at home, where both his girlfriend and newborn son were staying.

His heartbroken mum Mandy Davies, 53, has today said she can't even hug any of her family in grief because all are observing self-distancing.

She told NorthWalesLive: "We can't embrace each other and I can't even comfort my family because I can't see them.

"I can't put my arms around any of them because we have to stay two metres apart."

She said when she last spoke to Thomas on Wednesday he seemed to be getting better and she hoped he was over the worst of the illness.

But yesterday he was found dead by his girlfriend Rhiannon Elias, 27, and paramedics in protective clothing came to take his body away.

When Mandy went to the hospital to identify her dead son, she wasn't allowed to touch him or even see him for long.

"He had a plastic bag over his face," she said.

Mandy, a healthcare worker, said tests are due to be carried out to determine if Thomas had Covid-19, but added that he had no prior medical problems.

"He was fit, he was healthy, he was energetic, he never smoked," she said.

Rhiannon has now been told she must self isolate with her children Dylan Elias-Davies, four, and newborn son Morgan, for the next fortnight.

Mandy, who is no longer able to work, is now hoping to launch a fundraising campaign to help pay for Thomas' funeral costs.

She now wants people to take the threat seriously and remember that not just old people are at risk.

"There is nothing that can bring my boy back. I can't reverse the clock," she said.

"I can't ever speak to him again, I can't ever see him again.

"Self isolate. Listen. Just bloody listen."
