Violent protests broke out in the Minnesota city after an unarmed black man died after an altercation with a police officer. The officer was filmed pressing his knee into the neck of George Floyd, who can be heard in the video pleading for his life, saying he cannot breathe. Shortly afterwards, Mr Floyd died, triggering the violent riots.

America’s First Lady took to Twitter on Friday to condemn the violence, while expressing her deep condolences to the family of Mr Floyd.

She wrote: “Our country allows for peaceful protests, but there is no reason for violence.

“I’ve seen our citizens unify & take care of one another through COVID 19 & we can’t stop now.

“My deepest condolences to the family of George Floyd.

“As a nation, let’s focus on peace, prayers & healing.”

However, many Twitter users were unimpressed with her intervention and vented their fury at the First Lady, accusing her husband of having inflamed racial tensions throughput his presidency.

One wrote: “Your husband called the White Supremacists in Charlottesville who murdered a young woman and harmed many others, ‘good people’.

“Give it up.”

While a second, referencing NFL star Colin Kaepernick, posted: “No it doesn’t. “When @Kaepernick7 kneeled to protest exactly what happen to George Floyd your husband and his supporters attacked him nonstop.

“Just admit it there is no way black ppl can protest that will be acceptable to certain people.”

A third fumed: “Go find your husband in the WH and tell him to stop threatening the shooting of Americans.

“Peace and healing start with him.”

A fourth said: Your heinous husband encourages violence daily with Its abhorrent tweets.

“But you don’t care, do you?”

However, Melania had her supporters, with one tweeting: “She has the right to speak. At least she is trying to spread love and peace.”

Earlier on Friday, Twitter removed a tweet from the US President for allegedly glorifying violence, after appearing to suggest that looters could be shot.

In the original tweet, Donald Trump wrote: “These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen.

“Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way.

“Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!”

Mr Floyd’s death is just the latest incident involving the unprovoked killing of an African American at the hands of law enforcement officials.

In February, a young black man, Ahmaud Arbery, was shot dead by a former police detective and his son while out jogging.

Ex-cop Gregory Michael, a neighbourhood resident, told police he believed Mr Arbery resembled the suspect in a series of local break-ins.
