Glam girlfriend of cartel boss assassinated after being lured to fake shoe sale

Just months after the brutal gangland murder of drugs cartel boss Alexis 'El Alexis' Martinez in Mexico’s crime-ridden Jalisco province, his girlfriend Paulina Arreola Perez has been shot dead in what appears to be a targeted assassination.

Perez, 26, was formerly one of a glamorous trio of gangsters’ molls knows as Las Novias de La Union along with Valeria Diaz and Nayibi Mustafa. All three of them have been murdered in the past 12 months.

Since Martinez’s death, Perez had been running an online shoe-selling business, and police believe she may have been lured to her death by an assassin posing as a prospective customer.

Armed men on motorbikes shot her, along with a male friend identified as Eduardo Arturo Trejo in the borough of Benito Juarez in Mexico City on the night of June 9.

Paulina was shot at least nine times and Eduardo twice while they were sitting in her car. Paramedics arrived on the scene and rushed them to hospital, but both later died of their injuries.

It is believed she was targeted because of her links to the criminal group 'La Union Tepito', which is involved in the murder, kidnapping, extortion and drug peddling in and around the Mexican capital.

Karina Itzel Morales, a previous girlfriend of Martinez, disappeared in mysterious circumstances in 2018.

When her relatives launched an appeal for help in finding her on Facebook, people claiming to be members of La Unión Tepito got in touch with them to tell them to stop looking. " If Kari was lost, it is because she had asked for it. " one of them allegedly said.

Martinez, one of the cartel's leaders, who was murdered by a hitman disguised as a takeaway delivery man in the city of Zapopan in March.

Martinez liked to boast of his luxurious lifestyle though Instagram, posting photos of trips to Disneyland, Madrid, Paris and Milan.

He dressed exclusively in designer gear and even his luggage was said to be worth 200,000 pesos [about £7,000].

Through El Alexis, Paulina's life of luxury that she liked to show off on social media included shots of her on holiday in the likes of Dubai, Athens and Toronto, much of it paid for with cloned credit cards.

Following her boyfriend's death, the young woman took to social media to write: "Someday we will meet again."
