Harry and Meghan rub shoulders with gun-loving Republican tycoon worth $500m

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly become pals with a multi-millionaire tycoon who donated to an anti-immigration Republican candidate.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have made several visits to Bill Guthy, 66, who is worth $500 million.

Guthy backed hard-line Republican, Jimmy “Trumpbacker” Crumpacker, when he was running for Congress, the Daily Mirror reports.

Crumpacker said on Facebook: “I’m a gun-packing, Trump-backing, send-them-packing conservative.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have both slammed Trump – with Meghan labelling the ex-president “divisive and misygnostic”.

Guthy has supported Democrat causes too but backing Crumpacker seems hugely at odds with the royals’ views.

The tycoon is also a gas-guzzling driver who let eco-warriors Harry and Meghan fly on his company’s private jet.

That trip, last month, came after a string of public engagements in New York by the couple, who say they are on a mission to “build a better world”.

Since stepping down as senior royals they have launched the charity foundation Archewell – while also netting lucrative deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify.

A source told the Sunday Mirror: “Harry and Meghan have become regular visitors to Bill Guthy’s estate in Carpinteria.

“Bill is one of life’s winners. He certainly knows all about how to make a buck.

"Guthy has made donations to Democrat campaigns for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but his backing of The Trumpbacker seems to point to a vastly different view to that of Harry and Meghan.

“It appears the main thing the three of them have in common is a talent for making big money deals.”

Guthy lives on a vast estate in Carpinteria, north of Los Angeles and 12 miles from the home of Harry, 37, Meghan, 40, and their children Archie, two, and baby Lilibet.

He also has a £32million pad in Beverly Hills, with a tennis court and a pool, and drives a 17mpg Cadillac Escalade ESV.

That, plus his support of Crumpacker, may spark interesting chats with the royals.

Records show that he donated $5,600 in 2019 to the Oregon Republican’s failed bid to be elected to Congress.

Crumpacker vowed to protect gun rights and the unborn and to “stand with Trump, get the economy moving and build the wall”.

Guthy’s earlier Republican donations included $1,000 to the 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign.

Meghan spoke out against Trump in a TV interview in 2016.

She said: “Trump is divisive, think about female voters alone.

"In 2012 the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points and with as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that’s a huge chunk of it.”

Harry, meanwhile, told a prank caller who impersonated Greta Thunberg: “The mere fact Donald Trump is pushing the coal industry so big, he has blood on his hands. The effect that has on the climate.

“Trump will want to meet you to make him look better, but he won’t want a discussion about climate change because you will outsmart him.”

Guthy and business partner Greg Renker launched their firm in 1988 after being inspired by Think and Grow Rich, written by Napoleon Hill in 1937.

The pals used savings to promote the guide via TV infomercials.

Sales of the book, and a tape of Hill’s lectures, netted nearly $10million.

One of the best-selling self-help books of all time, it urges readers to believe anything is possible, telling wannabe millionaires to write down their aims on a piece of paper and read them back to themselves morning and night.

Guthy-Renker has gone on to work with the likes of Heidi Klum, Jessica Simpson, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Clarkson.

The Daily Star has contacted the Duke and Duchess for comment.
