Harry’s photo with Archie had ‘poignant’ meaning and was ‘far from the truth’
A photo of a beaming Prince Harry and his young son Archie shows one of the last moments before the Sussexes and the Royal Family's futures "irrevocably changed course", a royal reporter has said.
Royal journalist Daniela Elser has said the photo of Harry and Archie, released to mark Thanksgiving in 2019, "is a profoundly heartrending moment between father and son".
Harry and Meghan Markle shocked the world when they spectacularly quit the Royal Family to pursue a life of independence.
The couple announced in January this year that they would step back from their positions in the Royal Family following talks at Sandringham between Harry, Prince Charles, Prince William and the Queen.
Meghan and Harry have since relocated with their son Archie to California, having spent the intervening period living in Canada.
Ms Elsner wrote in Kidspot: "Weeks after this image hit the Internet, Archie’s parents flew back to London and shocked the world by spectacularly announcing that they had had enough of being full-time working members of the Royal Family.
"The monarchy was thrown into its greatest crisis since abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936. Harry and Meghan’s sensational announcement (whether they meant to or not), threw up deeply uncomfortable questions about what the whole gilded edifice stands for and what its use is in the 21st century."
"What lies behind this picture is deeply poignant and with the benefit of hindsight, this represents one of the last moments before the Sussexes and the royal family's futures irrevocably changed course.
"We now know that what this image that the Harry and Archie shot represented, of a happy family brimming with joy, was far from the whole truth and that behind the scenes, wheels were already in motion that would set the family on a crash course with the palace."
It comes after another expert said Her Majesty The Queen will be “very sad” that Prince Harry, wife Meghan Markle and grandson Archie won’t be with her this Christmas.
Penny Junor, author of the 1991 biography Charles and Diana: Portrait of a Marriage, says that Her Majesty has “a very soft spot” for Harry and the fact that he and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, won’t be able to bring their baby son to see his great-grandmother will cast a shadow over the Queen’s Christmas.
Penny said: “I am sure the Queen will be very sad not to see Harry and Megan and her youngest great-grandchild.”
