Meghan Markle pays ‘discreet tribute to Princess Diana in final royal outing’

Meghan Markle appeared to pay a touching tribute to Princess Diana yesterday in her final public royal engagement.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex greeted other royals including Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Service – their first public meeting since Megxit was announced two months ago.

Meghan put on a green dress and hat, similar to an outfit worn by Princess Diana in 1982.

In historic pictures, a 22-year-old Diana can be seen standing on Buckingham Palace's balcony attending Trooping the Colour, standing alongside Prince Charles.

Instagram users picked up on the comparison, with one account Princess Diana Iconic sharing a side-by-side image of both.

One fan wrote: "I love both of them. They have done lots of good things for the world.

"One of them still survived in life, strongly supported by her significant others, and could make the other person really proud for having a daughter in law like her."

Another user said: "'Ohhh right homage to Di!"

However, one user wasn't too happy and wrote: "There's no comparison! Diana is incomparable."

Prince Charles and Camilla turned up at the Abbey yesterday ahead of the Queen, always the final member of the congregation to arrive.

The Royal Family were introduced to a line of dignitaries, including Boris Johnson.

However, Charles reportedly didn’t shake hands with anyone as he arrived owing to coronavirus fears – with Harry snapped elbow-bumping Craig David.

Prince Andrew was missing from the service, having stepped back from royal duties last year after a disastrous BBC interview that probed his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Amongst the celebrities who attended the event, boxing champion Anthony Joshua delivered a reflection at the service, speaking about his Nigerian and British heritage.

Artists included singers Alexandra Burke and Craig David, who performed to the 2,000-strong congregation.
