Melania faced a lot of flack over her Christmas decorations during her four-year stay in the White House. In President Donald Trump’s first year in office, Melania replaced traditional fir trees with white branches that were roundly mocked on social media for looking “creepy”. The next year, she installed red, cranberry-covered trees at the White House, which were this time criticised for appearing to be covered in blood.
Then-President Trump criticised the media this week for their treatment of his wife’s Christmas displays.
In a speech at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, he said: “She would have the most beautiful Christmas decorations.
“I remember she made these magnificent red trees, and the media said ‘Oh, that’s terrible’. I said, ‘Honey, next time try white.
“She made magnificent ‒ remember, the most beautiful you’ve ever seen ‒ white trees, and they said, ‘Oh, that’s terrible’.

“I said the next time, ‘Let’s do it more traditional. Let’s go with green.”
Unearthed recordings released last year suggested that the pressure to decorate the White House had an impact on the former FLOTUS.
An audio recording surfaced in which Melania issued a foul-mouthed complaint about decorating the White House for Christmas.
The 2018 conversation was recorded and leaked by Melania’s friend Stephanie Winston Wolkoff.
The former First Lady said: “I’m working my a** off on the Christmas stuff that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right?
“Ok, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas planning for Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that were separated?
“Give me a f****** break.”
Melania was referring to a controversial visit she made to the US-Mexico border to visit children that had been separated from their parents.

During the visit, the First Lady had clumsily worn a jacket that said, “I don’t really care. Do u?”
In a statement Melania’s chief of staff Stephanie Gisham criticised Ms Wolkoff for releasing the recording.
She said in a statement: “Secretly taping the First Lady and wilfully breaking an NDA to publish a salacious book is a clear attempt at relevance.
“The timing of this continues to be suspect ‒ as does this never-ending exercise in self-pity and narcissism.”
Since being ousted from the White House, Mr Trump has performed a number of rallies to his base and sparked speculation that he is to run for office in 2024.
In one of his many interviews conducted in recent weeks, Mr Trump claimed that Americans should thank him for still being able to say “merry Christmas”.
Speaking to Newsmax, Mr Trump claimed he tackled a “woke” agenda that sought to cancel the term for its lack of inclusiveness.
Mr Trump said: “When I started campaigning [in 2016], I said, ‘You’re going to say merry Christmas again.’ And now people are saying it.”
He added: “That was part of my campaign. The country had started with this ‘woke’, I guess, a little bit before that.
“And it was embarrassing for stores to say ‘merry Christmas’.
“You’d see these big chains ‒ they want your money, but they don’t want to say ‘merry Christmas.’ And they use reds and they’d use whites and snow, but they wouldn’t say Christmas.”
