Serial killer Ivan Milat was forced to wear a nappy in the years before his death.

Newly released medical records revealed the 74-year-old, who was jailed in July 1996 for murdering seven backpackers, wore an adult nappy underneath his prison clothing.

An inquest into his death found he died of natural causes in October 2019 while serving a life sentence at Long Bay Prison in Australia.

Milat died while being treated for terminal oesophagus and stomach cancer at a hospital in Sydney. However, these illnesses were not a caused of death.

"Milat stated he enjoyed his own company and has no interest in any approved associates," the report said.

"He displayed an appropriate mood with some joviality at times. He is currently compliant with unit routine and is polite to staff."

It also revealed he rarely mixed with fellow inmates.

During his time in jail he had saved up $3,000 (£1682), but the only other possessions were letters from people who wrote to him.

Milat's victims included two British nannies, three Germans and two Australians, in Australia's New South Wales Belangelo State Forest between 1989 and 1992.

One of the British women, Joanne Walters, was stabbed 35 times, while the other, Caroline Clarke, was shot 10 times in what police described as "target practice".

The pair had met at a hostel in Sydney before going hitchhiking.

Australians Deborah Everist and James Gibson, both 19, vanished in December 1989.

Another victim, Gabor Neugebauer, was gagged and shot six times, while Simone Schmidl, from Germany, died from multiple stab wounds.
