Plane has to make emergency landing after passenger refuses to leave toilet

An airliner flying between Cyprus and Switzerland on Saturday, September 11, had to make an emergency landing at Graz in Austria –after one particularly irate passenger locked himself in the toilet and refused to come out.

The captain of Edelweiss Air flight WK371 from Larnaca to Zurich finally decided to divert to Graz after the passenger, a 51-year-old Russian man, refused to exit the cubicle despite being asked repeatedly.

The Airbus A320 aircraft touched down for security checks shortly before twenty past one in the afternoon on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

After the plane landed, the man finally left the toilet, but refused to offer any explanation for his bizarre behaviour. Nothing suspicious was found in his luggage.

A spokesperson for Graz state police told reporters: “The passenger behaved cooperatively towards the police and voluntarily showed them all his luggage.

“No dangerous objects could be found,” they added. “During his interview, he did not provide any information about the reasons for his behaviour”.

After the man disembarked, the aircraft continued to Zurich, with the passengers finally arriving at their destination some 45 minutes behind schedule.

All except for the toilet enthusiast, who was refused permission to re-board and told he had to continue his journey by train.

While the exact reason for the passenger’s lengthy toilet visit is not known, several commenters on Reddit had their own theories.

One helpfully posted: “Lactose intolerance plus plane equals bloat city.

Once I learned you can request lactose free meals on international flights, my life changed”.

While most commenters saw the incident as an embarrassment for the gentleman involved, commented Namzaroth disagreed, saying: “Embarrassing?

"I once produced a s*** of such epic proportions, that the flight I was on was forced to emergency land"

“I would print out that news article, frame it, and show it off to my hypothetical kids and grandkids.

“I would be the hero of their whole grade.”
