The body of Ashling Murphy, 23, was found by the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly, Ireland, last Wednesday. Devastated pupils of Durrow National School held the musician’s photograph outside St Brigid’s Church in Mountbolus during an emotional requiem mass.

It carried the message: “Fly high in the sky. Our shining light.” Some wept while others held roses as thousands gathered to say goodbye. Bishop of Meath Tom Deenihan said: “A walk on a sunny afternoon in January should be a happy event. No individual should die like Ashling.”

President Michael D Higgins and premier Micheál Martin attended. Irish police arrested a suspect in his 30s yesterday morning.
