Stray dog saves family from house fire and is reunited with long-lost owners

A stray dog has saved a family from a house fire, leading to it being reunited with its long-lost original owners.

Butter had been living outside Charity Golloway's home in Virginia, US, for a few months before the incident last Thursday.

Charity had placed an electric heater outside to keep Butter warm, but a malfunction caused the device to set on fire.

The hero pooch then fled its shelter and started barking at the house, alerting the Golloway family to the impeding danger.

The fire soon spread, with the heat eventually shattering the front window of Charity's house and flames growing out of control.

Charity's son managed to fight back the flames using a garden hose whilst the family waited for firefighters, who managed to tackle the blaze when they arrived meaning that the damage to the home was minimal.

Butter's quick thinking meant that nobody was injured in the blaze.

Charity told WJHL : "If it wasn't for him, who knows what could've happened.

"It could've been way worse. I'm really grateful for that stray dog that wandered up into my yard."

Firefighter Justin Stidham, who responded to the emergency call, also heaped praise on the pooch.

He said: "[If it wasn't for Butter] that house would've been lit up all throughout the ceiling, and we would've been there for hours fighting that house."

The dog was eventually rewarded for its heroics after an image of him posing with the firefighters went viral on social media.

The post caught the attention of Butter's actual owners who had been searching for their beloved dog – whose original name was Cooper – since he ran away in the summer.

Butter is now set to return home after the owners managed to contact Charity, who admits that it'll be hard to see him go.

Charity said: "He's going to be leaving us and that makes me want to cry, but I'm happy for him.

"We will be staying in touch."

To thank him for saving the day, Charity said that she will be cooking Butter a lovely steak meal.
