An American woman who loaded up her cases with gifts for the family back home while she was on a European vacation was heartbroken to find that her bags had been ransacked after she checked them in at the airport.

New Hampshire resident Gina Sheldon did lots of her Christmas shopping in in Italy and France, hoping to bring back presents worth over $3,000 (about £2,200) for friends and family.

But she unpacked her bags after returning home she found that the luxury gifts she had been planning to place under her tree had “replaced with dog food, an old T-shirt [and] a shaving cream bottle”.

Gina told her local New Hampshire TV station WMUR that she had bought up lots of luxury leather goods on her holiday.

“I had bought these really cute leather wristlet band purses that I had bought to give to various family and friends,” she said. “There was a leather jacket I had purchased for my 16-year-old.”

Gina had spent 11 days in Italy, stopping off in Paris for a few days on her way home.

She thinks that her bags were opened in Paris, as they were being processed though the baggage area at Charles De Gaulle Airport.

She has a theory on why the thieves put the dog food and other items in her case: “I think the reason they did that is because when it goes through the scan and it continued on its journey, it looks like a real luggage product”.

Gina had booked her return flight through Delta airlines in the US but the actual flight was operated by Air France.

“We apologise for this customer’s experience following Air France flight 334,” Delta Airlines told WMUR in a statement. “We have affirmatively connected with our partners at Air France and the customer to find a resolution.”
