Woman loads entire week’s Aldi shop into wrong car – but stranger returns it

We've all had bad afternoons at the supermarket but one woman's ordeal would surely have ranked as the worst were it not for the kindly actions of a stranger.

Sarah Cowan, 48, had visited her local store in Dumfries after a long day at work and loaded her £75 weekly shop into the car – the only problem was it wasn't hers.

Sarah loaded up the boot of a silver Nissan Qashqai and then returned her trolley before driving home, SWNS reports.

When she arrived she was shocked to discover that her boot was empty and her goods were sitting in the back of another silver Nissan Qashqai.

Horrifically, the mum-of-one also realised that she'd put her shopping and her handbag, worth £250, into the wrong car boot too.

She thinks that the mistake arose as she had parked next to exact same model of her car.

But amazingly, Sarah was able to locate her belongings when Aldi confirmed they had been handed in.

Now that she is whole again, Sarah, who works in a hotel, says she wants to thank the honest driver who returned her shopping.

She said: "It was such a lovely surprise, I couldn't believe that someone had handed them in.

"It just goes to show that there are some good people still out there.

"With the state of how the whole world is at the moment, it's been so lovely to see such a kind gesture.

"I'm so grateful to get not only the shopping back, but my handbag too – it was the last present from my late grandfather so had great sentimental value too."

Sarah's hilarious mistake perhaps stemmed from her own dissatisfaction at having to do the shop in the first place, as she confessed she was exhausted when her husband Darren, 48, suggested she buy the groceries on the way home from work.

She said: "I was absolutely exhausted and just wanted to go home.

"I did the food shop as quick as I could and thought I'd milk it so told Darren he had to run me a nice, hot bath to come home to.

"My car is a new one and you don't need to press anything on your keys to open the car, it just unlocks as you walk towards it with the keys still in your pocket.

"I opened the boot and saw that it looked slightly different to normal. It was like the bottom where the spare wheel usually is had been moved, so I wondered why Darren had done that.

"I was tired so I just put the shopping in, returned the trolley and went straight home."

When she finally did return home, she instructed Darren to unpack while she had a bath – not knowing the boot was bare.

She said: "He was shouting up the stairs and asking where the shopping was – I thought, what is he doing?

"I told him there were two big blue Ikea laundry bags in the boot alongside my dusty pink handbag but he insisted the boot was empty.

"I was annoyed enough before having to go downstairs, but then I saw the empty boot and slowly realised I must have unlocked the wrong car and put my shopping in the wrong boot."

With the saga now thankfully behind her, Sarah only wishes that the kind stranger had left their name so she could have thanked them for the sweet gesture.

She said: "I honestly thought I'd lost everything.

"I rang customer services and explained the weird situation, but couldn't believe it when they said someone had handed the lot in.

"I sent Darren to collect everything straight away but just wish I knew who the honest, kind stranger was so I could send them flowers or something."
